NORWAY — The Select Board gave its blessing Thursday night for an outdoor festival and street dance Aug. 21 to raise money for the Norway Opera House.
The festival will be held from 5:30 to 11 p.m. at the Town Square across from the Opera House on Main Street, plus the adjoining Longley Square. It will close Deering Street from Main Street to the KeyBank entrance.
Based on the 2015 street dance, Somers is expecting between 300 and 600 people to attend.
The board also approved a request from Debi Irons to close Temple Street for a dance party from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 12.
In other business, Russell Newcomb was reelected chairman of the board and Ryan Lorrain was elected vice chairman.
The board approved the purchase of a 2021 Dodge Ram 1500 with an eight-foot bed from Macdonald Motors in Bridgton. The purchase price of $21,337 was approved by voters at last month’s annual Town Meeting. The truck will be used by the Recreation Department, which includes parks and cemeteries.
Town officials reached out to local dealerships but none had a similar size truck on its lots nor could any order one from the factory due to a national shortage, Town Manager Dennis Lajoie said.
With the end of the governor’s state of emergency, the town announced it will no longer hold remote meetings.
Lajoie announced that the new highway garage is nearly 90% complete. Several of the road projects are done, including Gore Road, Huntington Avenue and Walker, Roberts, Bill Howe and Kal Shore roads. Crews should begin work soon on Sodom Road and Grove Street.
