Scott Vaillancourt, music director at the Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul in Lewiston, looks Wednesday through a set of open swell shades, or shutters, deep inside the Casavant organ, surrounded by its wooden and metal pipes. Last week’s heavy rain leaked through the roof and walls onto leather pouch boards about 20 feet above him that cracked, causing the organ to malfunction when he turned it on for Sunday’s morning mass. The damaged parts have been removed and parts of the organ have been shut down. Although it is still functional and will continue to be used, the organ is not as robust as usual so the upcoming scheduled organ concerts have been postponed. Vaillancourt thinks it will be fixed by early August when they expect to resume the concert series. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal
