Lewiston – Althea B. Keene King, 98, of West Poland passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021. Althea was born to Clara Bell Strout Keene and Fred Keene on May 10, 1923, 4th in line of 8 children.

Directly out of high school she went to Connecticut to visit a friend and ended up staying and working as a secretary at Pratt-Whitney. Here she met the love of her life Willis King. Following their marriage they lived in Springfield, Massachusetts for a while and then moved back to Maine living on Tripp Lake and after a bit to their home on Megquier Hill in West Poland. During this time she worked first as a secretary and then executive assistant to the president of Marcal Paper.

 

Following retirement, Bill and Althea bought a sailboat and sailed from Portland to Florida where they spent the winter and then sailed home. Eventually they bought a home in Florida where they spent the winter months, and spent summers in Maine. Following Bill’s death in Florida, she moved back to Maine permanently.

 

She loved sewing and was an avid quilt maker including one totally hand sewn. She was a kind and generous person loved by all who knew her. She will be missed.

 

She was predeceased by her parents; and sisters Gertrude Fuller, Eleanor Thurlow and Roselyn Emery; and brothers Howard Keene and Shirley Keene.

 

She is survived by brothers Norman Keene and Hugh Keene; and many nieces and nephews.

 

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff on 4 East at d’Youville Pavillion for their wonderful care these past 3 years.

 

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 7 at 11 a.m. at Highland Cemetery in West Poland. Arrangements are under the care of Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 26 W. Dwinal St., Mechanic Falls. Online condolences may be shared with her family at www.chandlerfunerals.com
