AUBURN — Five golfers began the final week of the 2021 Tabers Weekly League presented by Maine Mini Golf Tour with a chance to finish among the Top 3, and after a nerve-wracking season finale, the second summer season of the league has sorted out its champions.
Despite missing the final few weeks of the season, defending league champion Justin Pelletier qualified with enough rounds played — and he played them well enough — to earn the league title for the second consecutive year.
Pelletier posted a per-round average of 41.71 on the season, just ahead of Dan Brochu’s 42.54 average. Jordy Knoren (43.69) held off a late charge from Nathan Fournier (44.33) to claim third position for the season series, which began on April 28. Fournier finished in fourth overall, with Richard Patrie (44.81) edging Kyle Labrecque (45.15) for fifth.
Competitors played across 15 weeks, and to be eligible for season championship had to play in half of the contested events. Rained-out weeks did not count toward the requirement.
Four golfers — Brochu, Labrecque, Richard Patrie and Melissa Patrie — competed in every contested week.
In the weekly competition, after a blistering front-nine 16 that had him thinking of catching the top overall spot for the season, Brochu evened off over the next 27 holes to post a 38-44 — 82, good for first place in the 15th week of the season, but not quite enough to chase down the season championship.
Brochu’s 82 was three strokes better than Kyle Labrecque’s 85 for the top weekly prize. Richard Patrie, Knoren and Josh Roy rounded out the daily Top 5 on Aug. 4.
In the junior competition, Jackson Corey led the season wire to wire to earn the season title, his second in a row. His per-round average of 48.07 would have been good for eighth overall in the open division on the season.
Emersyn Corey took second in the season-long junior championship, with Rafael Hargreaves placing third.
In all, 48 players teed it up at least once during weekly play through the spring and summer, an increase over 2020.
The Maine Mini Golf Open is the next major local event on the mini golf calendar. The seventh annual event, with a top prize of $500 to the winner is Sunday, Aug. 8, at 9:30 a.m. at Tabers. Planning has begun for a fall league at Tabers, as well as a second Fall Classic. Details for those events will be released soon.
