DEAR SUN SPOTS: SEARCH (Seek Elderly Alone, Renew Courage & Hope), a program of Catholic Charities, is seeking donations of 4-ply yarn for our volunteer knitters. They need yarn of all colors, in good condition for hats, mittens, socks and slippers, lap blankets and afghans. The items are given to the needy of all ages in Androscoggin County.

We are also seeking volunteers to knit mittens and hats for the community. If you love to knit and would like to join us as a volunteer knitter, please contact us!

For more information about donating yarn, please call our Auburn office at 784-0157. Thank you to the numerous people in our communities who have donated yarn in the past. The yarn truly helps to support our volunteer knitters’ program. With much gratitude — Wendy, program director, no town

ANSWER: Do you have yarn tucked away in a closet or cupboard? This nonprofit would make good use of it. And next time you’re buying yarn, consider purchasing extra to give to this program and please keep these folks in mind if you are a knitter and desire to put your knitting mojo to good use.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Now that most people do not advertise much in the newspaper for houses for rent, where would I look? There must be a website that has this information. Do you have any ideas? Thank you for all you do. You are a wonderful resource. — Bill, Poland

ANSWER: The websites that come to mind are Facebook Marketplace, Craig’s List and Zillow. Some communities also have local rental property listings or property managers who have homes to rent.

It wouldn’t hurt to place your own ad to let property owners know what you’re looking for and where you want to be. Putting your needs and desires for a home out into the universe can lead to the perfect spot for you. Tell everyone you know you’re looking because someone may know someone, etc.

Be sure to protect yourself from scams! Only pay after you have met the landlord, seen the place, and confirmed everything is legit, taking along a buddy if at all possible.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for including my free soap-making supplies giveaway in your column (Aug. 16 Sun Spots). I had the items delivered by 10:30 a.m. I read your column every day and have gotten great information about many things. — Susan, no town

ANSWER: Sun Spots is a great resource to use when you want to give something away or need something. I’m so happy to help readers in this way. Sharing things we no longer need goes a long way to help others.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I wish to thank the kind soul who left a big bag of cat food and a box of Friskies at my door on the day of the Blueberry Festival in Wilton. Thank you, and all my kittens thank you, too. — Heidi, Wilton

ANSWER: Heidi, you have many caring friends and fans, and you can count me as one, too!
