I’ve seen some scary things happen while driving. I’ve seen people riding bicycles on the left hand side of the road, snowmobiles and ATVs driven on the left shoulder, and people walking on the right side of the road versus the left.

Snowmobiles and ATVs are vehicles, just like cars and trucks. But they aren’t supposed to be driven on the road.

I was driving Aug. 15 from Mechanic Falls to my Poland home with a vehicle behind me, when an ATV pulled onto Route 11 with two riders who weren’t wearing protective gear like helmets. I passed by them and put on my blinker to turn left onto Evergreen Drive. There was a good 100 feet between the two of us when I had to stop to allow an oncoming vehicle to pass. When it should have been safe, I started to turn, only to have the ATV pass in front of me at a high rate of speed. I missed hitting it by scarcely three feet. The riders were on the wrong shoulder of the road and coming from my left.

I would have had to live with it the rest of my life had I hit and injured or killed them. What have we come to when we ignore the rules of the road, and do not even teach our children the rules and to obey them?

Those two people were not children. They were young adults who should have known better.
