NEW YORK — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 41st home run and the streaking Toronto Blue Jays knocked the slumping Yankees out of the AL’s top wild-card spot, beating New York 6-3 Wednesday night.

The Yankees have lost five straight and 9 of 11 since winning 13 in a row. This latest defeat dropped them a half-game behind Boston for the first wild-card slot.

Teoscar Hernandez hit a go-ahead single in the seventh inning and Guerrero connected off Aroldis Chapman to begin the ninth as the Blue Jays won their seventh in a row. Toronto moved within 1 1/2 games of the Yankees.

Guerrero padded Toronto’s lead when he hammered a fastball several rows back in the left-field seats. He is three shy of Hall of Fame father Vladimir Sr.’s career high set in 2000 for the Montreal Expos.

Guerrero reached three times a night after his career-high 14-game hitting streak ended. Toronto won for the 10th time in 11 games.

Marcus Semien hit a two-run single during a three-run fourth. He scored the go-ahead run on Hernandez’s hit off Clay Holmes (6-3), which came shortly before Boston secured a 2-1 win over AL East-leading Tampa Bay.

Jake Lamb added a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

MARINERS 8, ASTROS 5: Jose Marmolejos hit a tie-breaking, two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning and J.P. Crawford padded the lead with two-run homer as visiting Seattle avoided a sweep.

Houston won the series opener Monday 11-2 and rallied Tuesday night for a 5-4 victory in 10 innings.

With the score 4-all, Luis Torrens singled with one out in the Seattle ninth and was replaced by pinch-runner Dylan Moore. Jarred Kelenic walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch by closer Ryan Pressly (5-2).

Marmolejos grounded a single to center to put the Mariners ahead. Blake Taylor relieved and Crawford connected for a drive to right field.

The Mariners trailed most of the game before tying it at 4 on a two-run double by Kelenic with two outs in the seventh.

Diego Castillo (3-5) struck out the side in the eighth for the win. Paul Sewald gave up a solo homer to Alex Bregman in the ninth before retiring the next three batters to end it.

Recently signed Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run homer and Jose Altuve had a solo shot for the AL West-leading Astros.

Houston starter Jose Urquidy permitted four hits and two runs in three innings in his second start since coming off the injured list.

Seattle’s Tyler Anderson allowed seven hits and four runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Mitch Haniger, Kyle Seager and Ty France hit consecutive singles to load the bases with one out in the first. Abraham Toro followed with a double to right field to score two runs.

TWINS 3, INDIANS 0: Joe Ryan carried a perfect game into the seventh inning of his second big league appearance, helping Minnesota win at Cleveland.

Ryan, who was acquired in a July trade with Tampa Bay for slugger Nelson Cruz, retired his first 19 batters before Amed Rosario lined a single through the left side of the infield with one out in the seventh.

Caleb Thielbar worked a perfect eighth and Tyler Duffey finished the one-hitter for his third save. Rosario was the only baserunner for Cleveland, which has been no-hit twice and held without a hit in a seven-inning game this season.

Ryan (1-1) struck out four over seven innings, throwing 61 strikes in 85 pitches. The 25-year-old right-hander made his major league debut Sept. 1 against the Cubs and allowed three runs in five innings.

Miguel Sano homered for Minnesota, which pitched back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2019. Nick Gordon had an RBI double and Byron Buxton drove in Ryan Jeffers with a fielder’s choice.

ORIOLES 9, ROYALS 8: Kelvin Gutierrez hit a tying two-run single, two Kansas City outfielders collided on a ball hit by Cedric Mullins, allowing two more runs to score, and Ryan Mountcastle followed with a two-run homer as host Baltimore scored all its runs in the eighth inning to beat Kansas City.

Baltimore has taken 2 of 3 from the Royals, who haven’t won a series at Camden Yards since April 2014.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

GIANTS 7, ROCKIES 4: LaMonte Wade Jr. and Evan Longoria each had two RBI during a four-run rally in the ninth inning and San Francisco won at Denver.

The Giants (90-50) won their fourth straight and became the first team in the majors to win 90 games. .

Brandon Crawford homered and Brandon Belt had three hits for San Francisco. Tyler Rogers (6-1) worked a scoreless eighth inning and Jake McGee pitched the ninth for his 30th save.

MARLINS 2, METS 1: Bryan De La Cruz had three hits, including a winning single off the center-field fence in the bottom of the 10th inning that gave Miami a win at home.

Miami starter Sandy Alcantara struck out a career-best 14 and allowed one run in nine innings. The right-hander gave up four hits, walked one and hit a batter with a pitch. His 114 pitches also were a career high.

Automatic runner Jazz Chisholm Jr. advanced to third on Magneuris Sierra’s sacrifice bunt against reliever Edwin Diaz (5-6) in the 10th. Jesus Sanchez struck out before De La Cruz drilled Diaz’s pitch over center fielder Albert Almora Jr.

With first base open, Mets Manager Luis Rojas made the curious decision to let Diaz face De La Cruz, who raised his batting average to .342, rather than walk him and pitch instead to Lewin Diaz, a .108 hitter.

NATIONALS 4, BRAVES 2: Juan Soto crushed a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning and the Washington relied on its bullpen after Sean Nolin’s first-inning ejection to win at Atlanta.

Soto’s 462-foot drive off Richard Rodriguez (0-1) landed about halfway up the seats in right-center and snapped a 2-all tie. Luis Garcia’s run-scoring double off Drew Smyly in the eighth drove in Yadiel Hernandez for a two-run lead.

Nolin was ejected after only eight pitches. He gave up a one-out single to Jorge Soler, who had three hits, before throwing a pitch behind Freddie Freeman.

Nolin hit Freeman in the hip with the next delivery, possible retaliation for Braves closer Will Smith plunking Soto with a pitch in the ninth inning of Atlanta’s 8-5 win Tuesday night.

The umpires huddled before ejecting Nolin. With Washington Manager Dave Martinez wearing a soft cast following a procedure on his left ankle last Thursday, no one came out of the dugout to dispute the ejection.

BREWERS 4, PHILLIES 3: Eduardo Escobar hit a tie-breaking solo homer in the sixth inning, and Milwaukee topped visiting Philadelphia.

CUBS 4, REDS 1: Jason Heyward hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Chicago a win at home.

The Cubs have eight wins in the last nine games.

Cubs a 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night for their eighth victory in nine games.

CARDINALS 5, DODGERS 4: Adam Wainwright pitched into the ninth inning and Yadier Molina homered, helping St. Louis beat visiting Los Angeles.

Led by Wainwright and Molina once again, St. Louis stopped a four-game slide. Tyler O’Neill also connected for the Cardinals, and Edmundo Sosa had an RBI single.

The Dodgers dropped to two games back of NL West-leading San Francisco.

INTERLEAGUE

RANGERS 8, DIAMONDBACKS 5: Nathaniel Lowe had three hits, Jose Trevino drove in three and visiting Texas won its fourth straight.

Last-place Texas matched a run from June 25-29, with both streaks coming on the road, where the Rangers are 20-51.

Arizona fell a season-low 50 games under .500 at 45-95. The Diamondbacks have lost five straight, all at home, and 10 of 11 overall.

TIGERS 5, PIRATES 1: Miguel Cabrera and Robbie Grossman each had four hits, and visiting Detroit avoided a sweep by Pittsburgh.

Cabrera was 4 for 4 with a double and three RBI. He doubled off the Clemente Wall in right field to score Grossman in the first, singled home Akil Baddoo in the third and bounced one up the middle in the fifth to bring in Jonathan Schoop.

Grossman was 4 for 5 and scored three runs. He singled in his first three at-bats and hit a solo home run just inside the right-field foul pole in the seventh.

NOTES

YANKEES: A day after Gerrit Cole exited his start because of tightness in his left hamstring, Manager Aaron Boone said the star right-hander was feeling better about his situation.

“I think he’s encouraged. I don’t think we have anything definitive yet,” Boone said before Wednesday night’s game against Toronto. “I think the next 24, 48 hours is going to determine where we move and how he responds but I think he was encouraged by how he felt coming in here,” he said.

Boone said Cole was not getting an MRI but also said the team would see “if that’s in the cards.”

Cole was pulled with two outs in the fourth inning of a 5-1 loss Tuesday.
