CHELSEA — A New York man was arrested Wednesday after police said they responded to a report of an armed robbery that led to a standoff with officers during their investigation.

Johnny L. Walker, 40, Rochester, New York, was charged with robbery, creating a standoff and aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs.

He was being held on $25,000 cash bail Wednesday at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta.

Deputies responded to Chelsea at about 4:50 a.m. to a reported armed robbery, according to information from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

A victim told police she was made to go to an ATM and withdraw cash, which was then taken from her at gunpoint.

During the investigation, police said, they identified a person of interest, Walker, who was reported to be staying on Cooper Road in Chelsea.

Deputies attempted to talk to Walker at the residence, but he would not leave the home, according to officials.

Police said a standoff ensued, with the residence surrounded by officers as negotiations went on for several hours.

At the same time, a search warrant was secured for the residence and an arrest warrant was issued for Walker.

Walker surrendered to deputies at about 12:15 p.m., police said. A search of the residence reportedly revealed a large amount of illegal drugs and more than $5,200 in cash, which was seized by investigators.

Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agents and a Maine State Police canine unit assisted the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office during the standoff.
