BALTIMORE — Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Teoscar Hernández each hit a grand slam, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. slugged his 44th homer, and the Toronto Blue Jays overpowered the Baltimore Orioles 22-7 on Sunday, finishing two runs shy of the franchise record.
Guerrero’s drive tied him with Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani for the major league lead. Jake Lamb also homered during a 10-run third inning for the Blue Jays, who took three of the four in the series.
Gurriel set the franchise record with his fourth grand slam of the season and also had a two-run homer in the fifth as he drove in seven runs. Danny Jansen had four hits, including three doubles, and four RBI.
Toronto had 19 hits and improved to 80-63, moving a fraction of a percentage point ahead of Boston for the first AL wild-card berth.
METS 8, YANKEES 7: Francisco Lindor broke an eighth-inning tie with his third homer, sending a drive whistling into the right-field seats after a pitch tipping spat with Giancarlo Stanton, and the Mets won at home in a heated Subway Series finale that nearly turned into a brawl.
Lindor hit a three-run homer batting left-handed in the second inning off on a hanging breaking ball from rookie Clarke Schmidt, had a solo homer in the sixth hitting right-handed on a Wandy Peralta changeup, and broke a 7-7 tie from the left side against Chad Green (7-7).
It was the first career three-homer game for Lindor, who has struggled through most of his first season with the Mets.
The Yankees lost for the 12th time in 15 games following a 13-game winning streak and dropped one game behind Boston and Toronto in the AL wild-card race.
RANGERS 4, ATHLETICS 3: Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits and two RBI, Taylor Hearn won his fourth straight start and visiting Texas put another dent in Oakland’s playoff hopes.
The A’s, who began the day two games behind the Yankees and Blue Jays for the second AL wild-card berth, have lost 17 of 26.
TIGERS 8, RAYS 7: Robbie Grossman drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning, Jeimer Candelario homered twice, and Detroit won at home.
Candelario’s second homer, a two-run shot, tied the game in the 10th after the Rays took a 7-5 lead in the top of the inning. Kyle Funkhouser (7-3) pitched a scoreless inning to pick up the win.
ASTROS 3, ANGELS 1: Lance McCullers Jr. threw six strong innings, Kyle Tucker homered and Houston beat visiting Los Angeles.
McCullers (12-4) permitted one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. He won his third straight decision and has allowed two runs or fewer in three straight starts.
After Juan Lagares tied it 1-1 in the fifth with a homer to left, Tucker hit a two-run homer to right-center off Jose Quijada (0-1) in the bottom of the inning.
ROYALS 5, TWINS 3: Kyle Isbel drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning, and Kansas City won in Minneapolis.
Adalberto Mondesi homered for the Royals and Whit Merrifield had three hits, including a pair of doubles.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
DODGERS 8, PADRES 0: Max Scherzer got his 3,000th career strikeout and took a perfect game into the eighth inning as Los Angeles complete a three-game sweep against visiting San Diego.
Scherzer retired his first 22 batters before Eric Hosmer doubled to deep right with one out in the eighth. The crowd of 42,637 saluted Scherzer with a standing ovation after he finished the inning.
The 37-year-old All-Star reached 3,000 career strikeouts when Hosmer went down swinging in the fifth inning.
The Dodgers remained 2 1/2 games behind the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants. San Diego remained a fraction of a percentage point ahead of Cincinnati for the second wild-card spot.
BRAVES 5, MARLINS 3: Ozzie Albies and Freddie Freeman each hit a solo homer off Anthony Bass in the seventh inning, Eddie Rosario also went deep, and Atlanta won at home.
The Braves, going for their fourth consecutive NL East title, padded their lead to 4½ games over the Phillies.
ROCKIES 5, PHILLIES 4: Garrett Hampson homered twice and knocked in all five runs as Colorado won at Philadelphia.
Both of Hampson’s homers came on 0-2 pitches – a three-run shot in the fifth inning on a hanging curveball by Phillies starter Aaron Nola and tiebreaking a two-run blast in the seventh off Hector Neris (2-6). Philadelphia pitchers have allowed 16 homers on 0-2 counts this season, the most in the majors.
CARDINALS 2, REDS 0: Nolan Arenado homered for the second game in a row and five pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout to help St. Louis win at home.
The Cardinals have won four of six, moving to within one game of San Diego and Cincinnati for the final NL wild-card spot.
GIANTS 6, CUBS 5: Wilmer Flores homered and drove in three runs, Kris Bryant scored two against his former team, and visiting San Francisco held on for its season-high seventh straight win.
Owners of the best record in the majors, the Giants matched their longest streak since a seven-game run in August 2020.
NATIONALS 6, PIRATES 2: Patrick Corbin gave Washington’s overworked bullpen a bit of a break, working seven strong innings as the Nationals avoided a three-game sweep at Pittsburgh.
Corbin (8-14) allowed two runs on four hits, striking out four with two walks to improve to 3-0 against the Pirates since joining Washington in 2019.
Lane Thomas hit a three-run homer in the fourth off Bryse Wilson (2-7) to put the Nationals in front to stay. Luis Garcia and Alex Avila also homered for Washington. Juan Soto doubled and tripled and is hitting .407 (22 of 54) over his last 16 games.
INTERLEAGUE
DIAMONDBACKS 5, MARINERS 4: Tyler Gilbert gave up two hits in another sharp outing, Ketel Marte homered and Arizona won at Seattle.
Seattle is now three games behind Boston for the second wild-card spot, with the Red Sox coming to town Monday for a three-game series.
The Diamondbacks broke open a 1-1 game with four consecutive hits off reliever Anthony Misiewicz (4-5) to start the sixth inning. Henry Ramos’ two-run double made it 3-1 and rookie Seth Beer finished off the string of hits with an RBI single.
BREWERS 11, INDIANS 1: Eric Lauer no-hit the Indians into the sixth inning a day after Milwaukee threw a history-making no-hitter, and his teammates belted five homers in a win at Cleveland.
Just hours after Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader combined on the record ninth no-hitter in the majors this season – and Cleveland’s record third time being no-hit this year – Lauer threatened to make it two in a row. He didn’t give up a hit until Ryan Lavarnway singled to center with one out in the sixth.
Kolten Wong and Avisaíl García each homered twice. Manny Piña also connected, and the Brewers moved closer to the NL Central title with a three-game sweep.
