100 Years Ago: 1921

The Ladies Circle of Auburn Grange will hold a meeting next Saturday afternoon to resume work for the coming year. A picnic supper will be served at the usual supper hour. All Ladies of the grange are cordially invited to be present.

50 Years Ago: 1971

The Cushman Hollis building on Court Street, Auburn, may be demolished In connection with the Union Street Bypass project and. If that is done, all industries located in the building hopefully will be relocated. within the city, City manager Bernard J. Murphy said this afternoon. Richard A. Luettich. Deputy chief engineer of the State Highway Commission says that as a result of the interest of several groups who have contacted SHC, there is now an indication of willingness to see the structure demolished as part of the project. Originally, the building was “due to be spared, to retain businesses located in the structure.”: Murphy, who was attending a meeting in Waterville was contacted there by the Journal and he confirmed that he has discussed the subject with the SHC, members of the city council, the mayor, Auburn’s state representatives, and occupants of Cushman Hollis Building  He said it is “desirous” to have the roadway go in the direction of the building but quickly stressed the point that a number of hurdles have to be overcome and “certain things worked out” before any decision is made on the building. The manager said the city is approaching the prospect of removing the building “cautiously” and if it is demolished he said it is hoped that all industries in the building can be retained in Auburn. Shapiro Bros. Shoe Co., is the largest firm in the structure. Murphy noted that some of the smaller businesses have already commenced plans to locate in other parts of the City.

25 Years Ago: 1996

For the first time in more than 15 years there will be square dance classes in Auburn-Lewiston. F &G Square Dance Club will sponsor classes for beginners at Washburn School, Lake Auburn Avenue,  Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. This will be for people who have never square danced and for those who danced before would like a refresher class. There will also be workshop tips for dancers who want to learn the quarterlies and dance-by-definition.
