Deputies Stewart and Blair raided a New Auburn home yesterday morning and secured several quart bottles of excellent Canadian rye whiskey. No arrests were made in connection with the seizure. The sheriff’s department understands that a claim will be filed for the return of the liquor, as the owner has had it for more than two years. It is very likely the claim will be allowed.

The Leavitt Area High School marching band will leave by bus Friday morning for the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass., where it will represent Maine on Saturday during Maine Day. Maine Day is an annual event showcasing diversity of the area and the products it produces. The students have been practicing since August for their appearance at the Exposition, known as the “Big E.” the largest fair held in the Northeast. Each year, one band is chosen to represent the state. Saturday’s event will include four performances, as well as a flag-raising ceremony, a parade and two concerts. The band will perform music that the students learned for the season, as well as the state song and Leavitt’s school song, said Band Director Sue Brady Barre. Forty students and 10 chaperones will depart on Friday and spend the late afternoon with the University of Massachusetts Minutemen marching band in Amherst. Students will observe a rehearsal and work with the UMass band’s director George Parks, a nationally acclaimed expert on marching. The six New England states are  honored on individual days at the Exposition. Each of the six states has a building on The Avenue of States showcasing their unique traditions, products and lifestyles.
