Lewiston needs to fight for the rights of its Indigenous neighbors.
Since the 1980 Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act, the tribes in Maine have been robbed from the benefits of over 150 bills passed by the U.S Congress. Now the tribes are fighting for justice and equal rights through LD 1626, and we need to show up.
As communities in Maine are forced to experience the impacts of environmental degradation and water pollution from polluting industries, we need to restore the Wabanaki Tribes’ ability to maintain tribal land, water, and resources. Autonomy for the Wabanaki would mean cleaner water for Maine.
Passing LD 1626 into law would restore the tribes’ cultural and economic self-determination. After hundreds of years of injustice, the people of Lewiston have a chance to do good for both our neighbors and ourselves.
On Monday, Oct. 11, people can support and learn more by joining the Rally for Wabanaki Rights: A Virtual Rally for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Attendees will experience a celebration of Wabanaki culture and learn about how Mainers can take action.
