LEWISTON — Elizabeth Eames, longtime resident, volunteer, single mother, and newly-retired professor, declared her run for Lewiston Ward 3 School Committee.

Calling herself the product of a public education, Eames considers American public schools to be the foundation of our democracy and a significant source of our collective identity. She calls for strengthening local educational institutions while still reckoning with very real fiscal constraints.

Because her own son benefited tremendously from his journey through Lewiston Public Schools (Farwell, Lewiston Middle School, Lewiston High School ‘10), Eames said she offers no pet projects on his behalf. She proclaims she is running, rather, to ensure fair treatment and full access for all — especially those with various special needs. For instance, she suggests paying careful attention to how COVID-19 learning loss and pandemic mental health challenges are unequally distributed across the spectrum of learners.

Should she win, Eames affirmed she will help to create structures for more communication, consultation, and collaboration between the committee and school staff, its students, and less vocal parents. Aiming for a more even playing field, Eames plans to offer historically marginalized stakeholders her ear.

Eames vows that if elected, she will strive for committee consensus, pledging to build things up, never tear them down. She suggests that respecting divergent worldviews is what anthropologists such as herself are trained to do.
