Harriet Abbott of Fryeburg is the first woman in Oxford County to be drawn to serve on the jury for the October term of the S. and J. Court.

50 Years Ago: 1971

The Brothers of the Sacred Heart, who have been associated with education in the Twin Cities for more than 40 years, celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding of their religious community on Thursday. At the brothers’ residence at 110 Ash Street, Lewiston, a Mass of Thanksgiving was offered in the evening and a banquet followed. Raymond Corriveau, pastor of SS. Peter and Paul Church, and the prior of the Dominican monastery, Rev. Gabriel Blain, were guests. The brothers came to Lewiston in 1928 when SS. Peter and Paul Parish opened its present elementary school. In 1939 they staffed St. Mary’s Elementary School and they’ve been associated with St.Dominic’s since 1941. The brothers also have taught at Biddeford, Winthrop and Old Town.

25 Years Ago: 1996

Leslie B. Otten, owner of Sunday River Ski Resort, will receive the 1996 Distinguished Citizen Award from the Pine Tree Council-Boy Scouts of America. Otten, president of Sunday River and chief operating officer of American Skiing Co., will be honored at the 18th annual award dinner at the Holiday Inn By the Bay in Portland Oct. 7. The program begins at 6:30 pm with proceeds benefiting inner-city operations.
