Robert James Wotherspoon Sr.

NEW GLOUCESTER –
Robert J. Wotherspoon Sr., 88, of New Gloucester, died Tuesday Oct. 5, 2021 at his home with his loving family at his side. He was born in East Providence, R.I. on Jan. 10, 1933 the son of the late Alexander and Mary (Robertson) Wotherspoon.

A graduate of East Providence High School class of 1951. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy.

Robert married his true love, the former Joyce Mollerberg on April 10, 1954 at Sacred Heart Church in East Providence, R.I. They started their family in East Providence, R.I. and he worked at Bird and Son, prior to moving their family to New Gloucester.

Robert then worked for L.W. Haskell with his brother John, and became a Master Licensed Plumber. He was the plumbing inspector for the Town of New Gloucester for 15 years. He retired from UA Local 783/716 Plumbers and Pipefitters after 44 years.

He was a member and past commander of The American Legion Post 311 In Seekonk, Mass., a member of the VFW in Yarmouth, Amvets Post 6 and Cumberland Lodge #12. He was a respected member of New Gloucester Volunteer Fire Department as well as in the Kora Shrine Crazy Cops. He enjoyed antique cars, tinkering in the garage, teaching his kids and grandkids to drive, traveling with his wife and spending winters in Nokomis, Fla. for several years.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joyce Wotherspoon, of New Gloucester; a son, Robert Wotherspoon Jr. and his wife Sally of New Gloucester, two daughters, Donna Dee and husband Steve of New Gloucester, and Kim Mason and husband Randy of Hazel Green, Ala.; a sister, Lois Clemm of Coventry, R.I., a brother, John Wotherspoon of Minot; 11 grandchildren, Belinda, Marc, Melissa, Krista, James, Nicole, Heather, Steven Jr., Ryan, Travis, and Dustin; 12 great-grandchildren; his faithful furbaby, Bandit; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, June Lefebvre and a brother, Richard Wotherspoon.

Visitation, Fortin Auburn Monday Oct. 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral service will be Tuesday Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. at East Auburn Baptist Church, 560 Park Ave., Auburn.
