FAIRFIELD — Three people escaped serious injury after their SUV veered off Interstate 95 over the weekend, struck a tree and became engulfed in flames, a spokeswoman for Maine State Police said.
The driver of the Toyota RAV4 and his two passengers suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening in the wreck Saturday in Fairfield, according to Katharine England with state police.
David Foss, 56, of Columbia Falls, was traveling south on I-95 about 4 p.m. when he bent over to pick up a cigarette. When he looked back up, the traffic ahead of him had slowed, England said in an email late Monday. To avoid hitting the vehicles in front of him, Foss drove to the right and went off the road before striking the tree.
Foss and his passengers, Sherman Merchant, 37, and Anthony Acampora, 38, were able to exit the SUV before it caught fire.
All three were taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
