PARIS — Two men, one from Bryant Pond and the other from Sumner, died last week from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash in Paris.

Rescue workers responded at about 4:45 p.m. last Thursday to a report of a rollover crash on Park Street, near the Dew Drop Inn and intersection of Paris Hill Road.

Chief Michael B. Dailey of the Paris Police Department said when emergency workers arrived, they discovered two vehicles had been involved in the crash. One of the vehicles had rolled onto a residential driveway.

The initial investigation showed a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Paul Gigas, 74, of West Paris was southbound on Route 26 (Park Street), according to Dailey. There were two passengers inside the SUV: Virginia Johnson, 86, and Robert Johnson, 77, both of Sumner.

Gigas crossed the centerline when he became distracted by one of his passengers, who was experiencing a medical event, according to Dailey.

Levi Cole-McDonnell, 16, of Greenwood, who was northbound in a 2009 Nissan Versa, reacted when saw Gigas’ vehicle had crossed the centerline, according to Dailey. Cole-McDonnell applied his brakes and swerved, causing his Versa to cross the centerline as the Equinox swerved back into its original travel lane and the vehicles collided. The Versa then rolled over, according to police.

Joshua McDonnell, 32, of Bryant Pond, who was a passenger in the Versa, died at the scene.

Robert Johnson died later at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

Cole-McDonnell and Virginia Johnson were taken to the hospital, where they were treated for multiple injuries, according to Dailey.

Gigas refused medical treatment at the scene.

Although the collision remains under investigation, neither speed or impairment appear to have been factors, according to Dailey.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police also responded to the crash, with the state police also reconstructing the collision.
