Name: Belinda Gerry

Age: 62

Occupation: Notary public; Auburn city councilor, at-large

Political experience: Three terms as Auburn state representative; eight terms (nonconsecutive) as Auburn city councilor

Why do you think you’re the most qualified, or best candidate for this seat?

I believe that I am a wise choice for Auburn voters to reelect as their at-large city councilor. I have previous legislative and City Council service, a strong relationship with our community and its needs, I treat all residents equally with honesty and respect. Everyone is my extended family, I value and seek everyone’s input and really listen. I study each issue, then vote according to what is right for all residents.

Please name two issues that you believe are critical to Auburn’s future, and how you would address them.

Residents rarely speak at council meetings. Various committees lack volunteers. We need to strengthen the dialogue between the City Council and all residents. I want to work with councilors to break down barriers, unplug our ears so we can really listen and create more ways for residents to feel validated and heard. I sincerely appreciate those who volunteer their time to our community.

Mindful city growth and future planning — but not at the expense of current residents and businesses

Do you think the city should expand recreational and development opportunities surrounding Lake Auburn? Why or why not?

I don’t support development around Lake Auburn but do support expanding recreational activities and opportunities that won’t damage Lake Auburn, its watershed, or possibly impact the quality of our prized drinking water. I strongly support fixing and upgrading our Auburn Outlet Beach so residents can fully use it again to bring their families to go swimming, have cookouts/picnics, play games, fish and use paddle boats/canoes or just relax and enjoy reading a nice book.

As a fresh face to the council, I bring much to the table. I have served Auburn on numerous boards and committees. As a volunteer I gained a base of knowledge of the issues Auburn is currently facing. I regularly read books on these topics in order to understand current best practices in the field. I believe I am well equipped to hit the ground running and make positive contributions to the City Council.

Please name two issues that you believe are critical to Auburn’s future, and how you would address them.

Downtown development: Our downtown is the most productive land in the city. Let’s fix things up that need to be fixed and enable our staff to sell city-owned properties. Evaluate our street configuration and encourage lively pedestrian activity.

New ELHS: Work with the School Committee to ensure that the new ELHS is fully supported. The school will bring more people to the area, which will bring new businesses and opportunity for everyone.

Do you think the city should expand recreational and development opportunities surrounding Lake Auburn? Why or why not?

Anything that happens around the lake needs to be done with the city’s water supply in mind. We must protect our water supply as it is critical to the city’s future. We should continue to limit development around the lake. There may be an opportunity for some trails around the lake.
