Weekend Blitz: Four area teams playing for spots in state title games

Class C South final
No. 2 Cape Elizabeth (8-1) at No. 1 Leavitt (7-0)
Saturday, 3 p.m.
The Capers tested the unbeaten Hornets more than any other team during the regular season, even taking a third-quarter lead before Leavitt pulled away and won 39-27 on Oct. 8. That was Cape Elizabeth’s only setback of the season, so it seems C South was headed toward this finale the entire season. (Note: This game was moved from Friday to Saturday due to weather.)

Class A semifinal
No. 3 Bonny Eagle (6-3) at No. 2 Oxford Hills (7-1)
Saturday, 1 p.m.
After his team lost to the Vikings 19-6 on Sept. 25, head coach Kevin Cooper confidently said that the Scots’ plan was to improve so they could earn a return trip to Paris to face Oxford Hills in the postseason. Well, here they are. It’s safe to expect that both teams have improved since their midseason matchup.

Class D semifinal
No. 3 Freeport (6-2) at No. 2 Winthrop/Monmouth/Hall-Dale (6-1)
Saturday, 1 p.m.
The Ramblers displayed their big-play ability in a 40-14 win over the Falcons on Oct. 18. Freeport coach Paul St. Pierre vowed his team would get better and earn another shot at Winthrop. The Falcons get a chance to prove their improvement. The Ramblers, meanwhile, are trying to reach their first state final since 2008.

Class D semifinal
No. 4 Oak Hill (5-2) at No. 1 Foxcroft (9-0)
Saturday, 7 p.m.
The Ponies trucked through the regular season, including a 41-20 win over the Raiders on Sept. 11. In that game, Oak Hill stayed with Foxcroft for most of the first half. To advance to the state championship game for the first time since the last of three consecutive state titles in 2015, the Raiders will have to play better for longer this week.
