DEAR SUN SPOTS: Since moving to Maine a few weeks ago, I’d like to spend more time outdoors. It would be great if other Sun Spots readers shared their favorite nature reserves and historic sites within the Lewiston and Auburn area. — Joaquin, no town

ANSWER: OK, Sun Spotters! Here’s your chance to shine by assisting a new fellow reader. Please send in your suggestions to help Joaquin feel more at home.

Meanwhile, several listings for the great outdoors in the area can be found at http://www.lewistonrecreation.com/292/The-Great-Outdoors and https://www.auburnmaine.gov/pages/government/outdoor-recreation

Just a small sampling of the places on these sites are Mt. Apatite, Lost Valley, Thorncrag Sanctuary, Range Pond State Park, listings for hiking, walking, and biking trail, all with directions and maps.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the query in the Nov. 22 Sun Spots written by Andrea in Lewiston who needed someone to repair a knitted cardigan/shawl, The Mother of Purl Yarn Shop at 541 U.S. Route 1 in Freeport, about a mile down from L.L.Bean, is the place to call and ask. The phone number is 869-5280.

They are a dedicated yarn shop carrying all types of yarns. The staff is very knowledgeable and all of them seem to be knitters. They know how to recommend yarns for any project, how to substitute materials, and offer knitting classes. If anyone knows how to help Andrea, I bet they would be the ones, or know of someone who could. Good luck! — No name, no town

ANSWER: The Mother of Purl Shop ( https://www.motherofpurlyarn.com/) is lovely and I have found that knitters and crocheters are helpful people who often like to share their skills, tips and advice with others. This shop is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Another option for Andrea is Lolita Ateliers (https://lolitaalters.com/). Located at 158 Court St., Suite #14 in Auburn, she is a trained seamstress who, among other services, does alterations, upcycling, custom designs and gives private lessons.

You can schedule an appointment through her website or call her at 405-3750. Her hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Saturday.

Another person who may be able to help you is Dona at If You Say Sew in Durham (https://if-you-say-sew.business.site/?utm_source=gmb&utm_medium=referral). The business is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dona can be contacted at 653-5507.

In the Rolodex, I also have Veronica’s Creations in Greene. The hours are Tuesdau through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The number is 514-6820.
