DEAR SUN SPOTS: If any readers are sending out Christmas cards this year, would you please drop an extra one in the mail? My step-father has Stage IV cancer and this will be his last Christmas. I want to try to make it a good one although his time is limited.

The mailing address is Walter Harvey, Jr. c/o Elaine Marion, PO Box 37, Turner, ME 04282. This would mean everything to us. — Elaine, Turner

ANSWER: I know Sun Spotters will rise to the occasion. Take care.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I submitted a letter to Sun Spots regarding The Compassionate Friends Annual Worldwide Candle Lighting. However, I neglected to add that “social distancing and masks are encouraged.” — Norma, no town

ANSWER: By now, this should go without saying. However, reminding everyone to keep themselves and others safe is still needed.

The ceremony to honor the memory of all children gone too soon will be held on Sun., Dec. 12 at 6:45 p.m. at the East Auburn Baptist Church at 560 Park Ave. in Auburn. For information, email lenahann33@gmail.com or call 713-7774.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have been successful over the last few years with your column. Now I’m looking for an upholstered recliner in a primitive style. If anyone has one for a reasonable price, I would be interested. My phone number is 241-7090. — Julien, Auburn

ANSWER: A wingback or colonial-style recliner is what Julien is looking for so if you have a chair like that in good condition, give him a call.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The question about using fresh yeast (Dec. 2 Sun Spots) evoked happy memories of my childhood watching Mom make bread. I took on the recipe at age 14.

We always proofed the yeast with a small amount of sugar and warm water (tested on our inner wrist like a baby’s formula). Mom proofed her bread in the oven with the light on.

I have evolved to bringing a glass container with water to a boil in the microwave. I then place my dough which is in a greased bowl with a flour sack towel over the top into the still warm and humid microwave. I can check the rate of the rise by starting to open the door just to the point where the light comes on which keeps the warmth in if it isn’t ready yet. I have very good luck with this.

That being said, the rising method really depends upon your level of patience. I have mixed up pizza dough and let it rise in the refrigerator. — Wanda, no town

ANSWER: Reader responses such as this increase my level of job satisfaction tremendously. It makes me happy when the column brings up good memories and prompts Sun Spotters to write in with their helpful hints.

I’ve never used the microwave method and plan to try it soon.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: My husband was the customer who found the card at Staples (Dec. 6 Sun Spots). He never actually looked at the name or even realized it was a credit card. We’re just happy it found its way home and wanted to say “you’re welcome” to the thank you! — No name, no town
