PARIS — After voting by a large margin at their Dec. 6 meeting to release students an hour early on Fridays following the holiday vacation break, SAD 17’s board of directors scheduled a special meeting for Dec. 10 to rescind the measure. Instead, the board voted to change the early release time on Wednesdays from one hour earlier to two.

The extra hour will be protected time against training, administrative meetings, and other events, providing instructional staff with opportunities for individual and group planning and preparation, improvement of the online classroom spaces, and any work-related activities selected by the classroom-based instructional staff. School staff may also request to use the protected time for meetings with supervisors to review teacher goals.

Child care will continue to be provided in all elementary schools through their regular dismissal times in support of the early release.

Superintendent Dr. Monica Henson had requested providing educators with the extra hour in response to continued COVID-related absences and other disruptions. District-wide many teachers become responsible for twice as many classes during times that their colleagues are in quarantine and ed techs are pulled from their regular classroom duties to substitute teach elsewhere.

The final vote Friday evening  to rescind the plan for Friday early release and change the schedule for Wednesday early release was 12-4.
