NORWAY — Volunteers are needed to walk students to and from Guy E. Rowe Elementary School daily beginning Tuesday.

The Walking School Bus hours of operation are 8:30 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Volunteers are also needed from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays.

The program was established in 2015 as the Oxford Hills School District planned to stop busing all students in grades one through six who live in a designated downtown area — about half a mile from the school on Marston Street — requiring them to walk to school year-round. Trained and vetted volunteers were organized to accompany the estimated 50 to 60 students who lived in the area.

The nationwide program was implemented to improve students’ health by encouraging walking and to save transportation costs.

In its inaugural run, 18 students were accompanied by a few adults, but since then there has been a lack of volunteers and money for the program. Eighteen students walk to and from the school now.

Those interested in information and/or volunteering may call the school at 743-5183.
