The Twin City Thunder are ready to move on from their trip to Long Island, New York.

The P.A.L Islanders swept the Thunder with a 3-0 win Saturday in a USPHL National Collegiate Development Conference game in East Meadow, New York.

“(Goalie) Dane Couture played really well,” Thunder coach Dan Hodge said. “He kept us in there, made some big saves, we’ve had some good goaltending all year. They are a team that played a real strong system and we came down here not prepared.”

After a scoreless first period, the Islanders power play put P.A.L. (21-11-1, 43 points) on the board first early in the second period. Spencer Korona scored his ninth goal of the year.

Six-and-half minutes into the second period, Will Kormanik put the Islanders up 2-0.

Both goals came on a five-minute major power play after Thunder (16-12-2, 34 points) forward Caden Smith received a contact to the head penalty, which also carried a game misconduct.

“I thought it was a (questionable call), but it is what it is,” Hodge said. “They got a five-minute power play and they scored two goals on it. That was the hill that we had to climb. They got a lot of shots on that power play. It’s tough to kill a five-minute major against a team with a strong power play.”

Ryan Mahlmeister, who had an assist on Kormanik’s goal, scored a power-play goal to extend the lead to 3-0 nearly six minutes into the third period. Kormanik had an assist, along with Jake Geraci.

Harrison Chesney earned the shutout for the Islanders.

The Thunder will play their first home game of 2022 on Friday, with the Northern Cyclones paying a visit to Norway Savings Bank Arena at 7:30 p.m. The teams will then meet again next Sunday in Hudson, New Hampshire, at noon.
