AUBURN — The same day the city lost a Holy Donut, it gained a Five Guys.

The restaurant chain is opening its seventh location in Maine on Center Street this summer.

Franchisee Jody Goehring with Hyde Park Ventures said on Wednesday that they had been searching the Twin Cities for years trying to find the ideal site before discovering the free-standing, former bank building at 223 Center St.

“Auburn and Lewiston has always been an area that we believe appealed to the Five Guy’s consumer,” he said.

The location has been picked as one of the first five in the country to feature a pick-up window at the popular burger restaurant.

“(It’s) not quite a traditional drive-thru, but they look very much like it,” Goehring said. “You order ahead, then you tap a button on the app that says ‘I’m on my way,’ and we can kind of watch as you make your way to the restaurant. We start cooking food at different times, so that when you get there it’s all fresh and ready to go for you.”

It will also have seating inside for 25 to 30 people, he said.

Renovation work has already begun on the 2,360-square feet space. It was leased to Hyde Park Maine I, LLC by Rancourt Associates with Drew Sigfridson and Noah Stebbins of The Boulos Company helping broker the lease.

Goehring said Hyde Park Ventures, based out Natick, Massachusetts, has owned the franchises in Maine for four years, as well as locations in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont and in other states.

Five Guys has restaurants in Brunswick, Augusta, Biddeford, South Portland, Waterville and Bangor.

For Auburn, they’ll be looking to hire 50 people, a mix of full- and part-time employees.

The goal is to open the location in June.

“We’re really excited about what we’re going to do to that space. It will certainly pop off Center Street,” Goehring said.
