Ducks huddle in South Portland, near where the Fore River joins Portland Harbor, at the end of January. Ducks, like many birds, use a countercurrent heat exchange system between the arteries and veins in their legs to keep their feet from freezing. Their legs have tendons and bones instead of muscles and nerves like mammals.
