WATERVILLE — Federal agents went to a building on Front Street on Friday morning as part of an ongoing investigation, authorities said.

The FBI was seen on Front Street near the intersection with Union Street. An FBI spokeswoman, Kristen Setera, said the agents were there as part of a “court-authorized activity” but declined any further comment.

She said additional details might be released next week.

There was some speculation that the incident involved a standoff with a suspect, but Waterville police Sgt. Scott Dumas said that was not the case. He would not release any details on the incident, saying it involves an FBI investigation and not one involving Waterville police.

The regional headquarters for the FBI is in Chelsea, Massachusetts, with Maine offices in Augusta, Bangor and Portland.
