After helping lead Bates to a NESCAC championship and an NCAA tournament berth as the Bobcats’ top scorer, junior captain Meghan Graff was named the NESCAC Player of the Year on Wednesday.
Graff was third in the conference in both points (16.3) and assists (4.4) per game. She was also named first-team all-conference after being a second-team selection in 2020.
The guard from South Portland is the sixth player in program history to be named NESCAC Player of the Year, following in the footsteps of Emily King (2000), Kate McLaughlin (2001), Olivia Zurek (2005), Meg Coffin (2006) and Val Beckwith (2009).
Teammate Mia Roy was named second-team all-conference. The senior averaged 12.9 points per game and broke the NESCAC tournament single-game scoring record with a 35-point performance in a quarterfinal win over Middlebury.
HARRIS NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE: Lewiston High School graduate Victoria Harris was chosen for the Little East Conference first team.
Harris, a senior, led the University of Southern Maine women’s basketball team in scoring (12 points per game), rebounding (7 per game), field goal percentage (44.4%) and blocked shots (28), and was second on the team in steals (54). Harris ranked eighth the conference in scoring, fifth in rebounding, fifth in steals and second in blocks.
Harris’ teammate, Jackie Luckhardt was named to the all-conference second team and to the all-defensive team.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
BATES’ BAXTER GARNERS NESCAC HONOR: The NESCAC men’s all-conference awards were also announced Wednesday, and Bates junior captain Stephon Baxter landed on the second team.
Baxter led the conference in scoring, at 20.4 points per game, while playing 35 minutes per game, which was second-most in the NESCAC. His 87.2% free-throw shooting was the conference’s third-best mark.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
BATES 18, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Trish Balser, Dana Swarz and Kate Loughlin had hat tricks as the Bobcats (1-1) topped the Huskies (1-1) at Lewiston.
Emma Austin and Annie Lowenstein each had a pair of goals as Bates received scoring from 10 players.
Rachel Shanks scored for Southern Maine. Lewiston grad Cece Racine made 14 saves in goal for the Huskies.
ST. JOSEPH’S 22, THOMAS 2: Lydia Dexter had five goals and seven assists as the Monks (2-0) dumped the Terriers (0-1) at Standish.
Shauna Clark provided three goals and an assist for St. Joseph’s, Bridget Collins, Megan Mourmouras, Caily Wesley, Mackenzie Siebert and Brianna Paul each scored twice.
Anna Chadwick and Alia Chasse scored for Thomas.
MEN’S LACROSSE
SOUTHERN MAINE 11, HUSSON 9: Aiden Mitchell scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter to power the Huskies (1-0) as they closed with seven unanswered goals and rallied past the Eagles (0-2) at Bangor.
Tucker Mussinow had a hat trick for Southern Maine, Nick James added two goals and an assist and Jacob Lang (Oxford Hills grad) and Aman Zusner also scored. Oxford Hills grad Nathan Plourde made 11 saves in goal for the Huskies.
Sean Lyne had two goals and an assist to lead eight scorers for Husson. Oak Hill grad Darryn Bailey had a goal and an assist and Lewiston grad Roman Dennis added a goal. Fellow Lewiston grad Bryan Wagg stopped 12 shots for the Eagles.
EMERSON 14, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 13: The Lions (4-0) took the lead for good on Hunter Gervais’ goal with 59 seconds to play in the first half, capping a 5-0 second quarter and then held off a late charge to top the Nor’easters (2-2) at Boston.
Nicholas Fulgione led Emerson with six goals and an assist, and Gervais added four goals.
Ryan Hazard had four goals for UNE as it outscored Emerson 6-1 down the stretch.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
NORTHEASTERN 3, MAINE 1: Maddie Mills scored with 8:11 to play in the second period to break a scoreless tie and Maureen Murphy added a power play goal 4:05 later as the top-seeded Terriers (29-4-2) eliminated the fifth-seeded Black Bears (15-18-1) in a Hockey East semifinal at Boston.
Ida Kuoppala get Maine on the board while on the power play midway through the third period, but Murphy answered 3:30 later to seal the contest for Northeastern.
Aerin Frankel recorded 12 saves for the Terriers, while Jorden Mattison stopped 38 shots for the Black Bears.
