100 Years Ago: 1922

Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Abbott of Western Avenue entertained the Auburn Heights Progressive Whist Club, Saturday evening. A buffet luncheon was served before whist was started. High scores of cards were made by A. A. Abbott and Mrs. O.W. Ridley, The consolation prize went to H.A. Baird. At the next meeting Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Golder of 31 Western Avenue will entertain.

50 Years Ago: 1972

The high brick walls of what was the high business block housing Auburn Novelty Co. were knocked down by a large crane Monday night as smoke continued to hang over the Auburn business district of the  three-alarm morning blaze which gutted the three-story brick building, which for years was the home of Twin City Tire. Chief Ralph S. Adams and other city officials ordered that the high brick walls of the burned-out structure be toppled. Fire was still burning in several pockets in the structure when the large crane of Lewiston Crushed Stone Co. Inc, swung the clamshell bucket against the brick walls. As the bucket hit the wall it was seen to waver but once the crane was able to pull interior trusses out of the building the swing of the bucket was sufficient to send the walls tumbling down on the other debris.

25 Years Ago: 1997

Ruth Libbey O’Halloran will talk about her book, “Historic Lewiston: Its Architectural Heritage,” and sign copies during a program at 7 p.m. March 7 at the Lewiston Public Library. Dr. O’Halloran’s is the fifth book published by the Lewiston Historical Commission to inform people about the history of the City of Lewiston. The first in a new series at the library called “Library After Hours,” the event will also feature slides of Lewiston architecture from the collection of Gridley Barrows. ‘A native of Lewiston, O’Halloran received her master’s degree from University College in Dublin, Ireland, and her doctorate in church history at Catholic University of America. O’Halloran has taught in Ireland, at several colleges in Maine, and currently teaches at St. Joseph’s College in Windham. The Lewiston Public Library and Lewiston Historical Commission are co-sponsoring the special program. Copies of the book are available at the Carriage House, Victor News, and will be for sale at the library on the evening of the program. The cost is $5.
