Devin McCourty announced Sunday on Twitter that he’s re-signing with the New England Patriots.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the 34-year-old McCourty is getting a one-year deal for $9 million. He joins Kyle Dugger and Adrian Phillips on the depth chart at safety.
• The Minnesota Vikings and quarterback Kirk Cousins agreed to a one-year contract extension, his agent announced.
Cousins was scheduled to carry a salary cap charge of more than $45 million, making it imperative for the Vikings to reduce that number either by trading him or extending him with a deal that would flatten out his guaranteed money.
• The Dallas Cowboys agreed on a long-term contract with receiver Michael Gallup, a day after agreeing to trade Amari Cooper to Cleveland.
Gallup is returning on a $62.5 million, five-year contract, two people with knowledge of the agreement said.
• Tight end Zach Ertz re-signed with the Arizona Cardinals, agreeing to a three-year contract. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
Ertz, 31, had 56 catches for 574 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games with the Cardinals last season following an October trade with Philadelphia.
• The Buffalo Bills addressed a key depth need at receiver days before the start of free agency by re-signing Isaiah McKenzie to a two-year contract.
McKenzie returns for a fifth season in Buffalo, where his speed and versatility allowed him to create a play-making niche in the Bills’ offense.
BASKETBALL
G LEAGUE: Chris Clemons matched his one-week-old career high with 41 points, leading the Maine Celtics to a 125-103 win over the Wisconsin Herd in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Brodric Thomas and Isaiah Cousins added 21 points apiece for Maine, which pulled away with a 19-2 run early in the fourth quarter. John Bohannon recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Matt Ryan chipped in with 13 points.
Rayjon Tucker led Wisconsin with 22 points.
HOCKEY
ECHL: Sebastian Vidmar recorded a hat trick and Jordan Kaplan scored a tiebreaking power-play goal midway through the second period as the Adirondack Thunder pulled away for a 5-2 win over the Maine Mariners in Glens Falls, New York.
Adirondack got four unanswered goals after Maine took a 2-1 lead in the first period on goals by Nick Jermain and Marc-Olivier Duquette.
TENNIS
BNP PARIBAS OPEN: Andrey Rublev beat Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-4 in the second round in Indian Wells, California, improving the Russian’s record to 15-2 this year with his 10th straight victory.
Andy Murray lost to No. 31 seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan, 7-6 (9), 6-3.
A trio of American men won: No. 23 John Isner defeated Sam Querrey, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3); Steve Johnson beat No. 22 Aslan Karatsev, 7-6 (5), 6-4; and No. 20 Taylor Fritz beat Kamil Majchrzak of Poland, 6-1, 6-1.
In women’s play, No. 3 Iga Swiatek got by 29th-seeded Clara Tauson, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-1. Petra Martic of Croatia outlasted 11th-seeded Emma Raducanu, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-5, in nearly three hours. No. 25 Madison Keys advanced 7-6 (4), 6-1 over Alison Riske.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: After a week of unprecedented turmoil for Chelsea, Kai Havertz gave the club’s fans and staff a reason to forget about their worries for a moment, netting an 89th-minute winner for a 1-0 victory over Newcastle.
The win enabled Chelsea to maintain a solid grip on third place in the Premier League standings.
• Arsenal maintained its grip on fourth place, thanks to a 2-0 win over Leicester.
Thomas Partey netted early and Alexandre Lacazette added a second-half penalty as Arsenal secured its fifth straight league win.
• Ukrainian forward Andriy Yarmolenko scored the opening goal to help West Ham beat Aston Villa, 2-1.
Yarmolenko was back in the Hammers squad for the first time since being granted compassionate leave because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and was in tears after celebrating his 70th-minute goal, dropping to his knees with both arms pointing up to the sky as he was mobbed by his teammates.
The win ended a three-game losing streak in all competitions for West Ham and left the Hammers three points behind Arsenal in the battle for fourth place, though Arsenal has three games in hand.
GERMANY: Erling Haaland and Gio Reyna returned from injury as Borussia Dortmund cut Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga lead to seven points with a 1-0 win over coronavirus-hit Arminia Bielefeld.
Marius Wolf’s first-half goal was enough for Dortmund to inject a measure of excitement into the title race with eight rounds left. Dortmund still has a game in hand on Bayern and can further reduce the nine-time defending champions’ lead to four points with a win Wednesday at Mainz in a postponed match.
GOLF
LPGA: Nanna Koerstz Madsen became the first Danish player to win an LPGA Tour title, beating Lin Xiyu of China on the second playoff hole at the Honda LPGA Thailand.
Both players set a tournament record of 26-under 262 in regulation, then birdied the par-5 18th in the first extra hole before Madsen sealed the win with a 7-foot eagle putt.
SKIING
WORLD CUP: Henrik Kristoffersen won his second race in two days at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, while Olympic champion Marco Odermatt finished third in the penultimate giant slalom of the season to all but clinch the overall title.
Stefan Brennsteiner of Austria finished 0.23 seconds behind in second.
