GREENE — Selectmen announced Monday that Carol Buzzell of Hartford, a former longtime employee of the town, will be the next town manager.
Born and raised in Greene, Buzzell was an assistant town clerk in Greene from 1999-2018. She was then hired as the deputy clerk, then town clerk, in Canton. She announced her resignation Thursday.
“When I saw the job opening for Greene town manager, I knew it was time to go home,” Buzzell said. “My roots are and always will be in Greene. (I’m) so excited to get started on this next chapter in my life.”
The selectmen’s familiarity with Buzzell, along with her deep connections in Greene, made her a clear choice, Reny said.
“We saw no need to go further,” he said in a phone interview Monday. “Carol was the one that provided us with the comfort we thought we needed to hire a town manager.”
Beyond her extensive experience in municipal government, Buzzell is also a lifetime certified town clerk. Reny said the distinction is not common.
An individual must have at least 10 years of experience as a town clerk in order to be eligible for the lifetime certification, according to the Maine Town and City Clerks’ Association.
Buzzell has already been in the Greene town office to start the “torturous job of being our town manager,” Reny joked.
Beginning April 11, she’ll not only take on the role of town manager, but also town clerk, treasurer, tax collector, emergency management director, road commissioner and registrar of voters.
Former Town Manager Darlene Beaulieu retired this month after two years.
