This photograph shows mill workers breaking the ice in the Lewiston canal around 1900. In order to keep Lewiston’s mills working throughout the winter months it was necessary to stop them from freezing up completely, which sometimes meant breaking up the ice by hand. Franco Fridays is a recurring feature offering a photo from the Franco-American Collection at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College in Lewiston.
