Bates college’s Sydney Byrnes has been named the Women’s Tennis Senior Sportswoman of the Year by the New England Small College Athletic Conference, the conference announced this past week.

The Bobcats team captain from Aix-en-Provence, France, is the first player in program history to earn Senior Sportswoman of the Year distinction.

According to a Bates College Athletics press release announcing the award, “The honor is given annually to the individual who best displayed a high standard of tennis coupled with the highest levels of sportsmanship.”

Byrnes helped Bates qualify for the NESCAC tournament for the first time this season. She was part of two match wins in the Bobcats’ Senior Day victory over Hamilton, which clinched the postseason berth for Bates.

“Syd’s leadership was an example for all of her teammates,” Bates head coach Paul Gastonguay said in the press release. “She is a crafty, gritty, tenacious competitor, and she is always fair, incredibly kind, has a huge heart, and is always gracious in victory and defeat. I know that everyone who has played with or against Syd would share these sentiments.”
