Applications for the 20th year of the Joseph W. Mayo ALS Scholarship are open until Wednesday, June 1.

Available to Maine high school and GED graduates who have experienced ALS in their family, this scholarship was created by friends of the late Joe Mayo, clerk of the Maine House of Representatives, a state house member from Thomaston, UMO graduate, organizer of special programs at the State House for ALS patients and their families, and a nationally-known author of a revision for managing state legislatures, “Mason’s Manual of Legislative Procedures,” according to a news release from the scholarship committee.

Each year scholarships totaling $5,000 can be awarded to Maine high school and GED graduates to advance their higher education, either through traditional or non-traditional programs. Scholarship award winners may also compete for yearly renewals including for graduate school.

Applications are available through the Maine Community Foundation at mainecf.org, and can be submitted online by June 1 to the scholarship committee via joepietroski@gmail.com.

Hanna Roy of Auburn, a graduate of Edward Little High School, now attending St. Joseph’s College in Windham.
