GREENWOOD — A chimney fire that spread to the roof and walls Thursday evening caused extensive damage to a residence at 16 Oak Road.

The initial call of a chimney fire came in at 5:43 p.m., according to Fire Chief Ken Cole.

The blaze, however, quickly spread to the roof and interior walls. By the time firefighters brought the fire under control about two hours later, the home had extensive interior damage, while the outside had mostly smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported, and a cat, the only pet in the house at the time of the fire, was carried out by the residents, Cole said.

Firefighters from Bethel, Woodstock and Newry assisted the Greenwood Fire Department. Pace Ambulance was also on the scene.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to investigate. The cause remains under investigation, but appears to have started near the chimney.
