NORWAY — The Stone-Smart Post #82 will hold a dedication ceremony on Monday at its Memorial Corner at Guy E. Rowe Elementary School in Norway, starting at 11 a.m.

The family of Vernon Brown, a World War II veteran and past commander of the American Legion, has donated his flag to the post. Brown, a lifelong resident of Oxford Hills, passed away on April 12, 2006.

Brown’s daughter Peggy Heikkinen has always wanted to see the flag flown in his honor.

“I woke up in the middle of the night and woke my husband up one night,” Heikkinen told the Advertiser Democrat. “I said, ‘I’ve got the perfect place – the Legion!”

Heikkinen wrote a letter to the commander of the legion, Roger Polvinen, offering to donate it in memory of her father and made arrangements for dedicating the flag.

Brown’s flag will be raised during a Memorial Day ceremony at Rowe School at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend.
