SARASOTA, Fla. — The Bates women’s rowing team fell one point short of claiming its fifth consecutive NCAA Division III national championship on Saturday.
The Bobcats’ second varsity eight won its grand final race, the eight consecutive time the school’s second eight has earned a gold medal.
That gave Bates 16 points, setting the stage for the first varsity eight grand final. The Bobcats finished third in that race, giving them 34 more points for a total of 50, which was one point less than Wellesley’s 51. Bates placed second.
COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD
BYRNE, LAMBERT AT NATIONALS: Bates College’s Liam Byrne placed 12th in the hammer throw Saturday at the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships in Geneva, Ohio.
Byrne’s third and final throw went 54.75 meters. The Ridgefield, Connecticut, junior also placed 19th in the discus on Thursday.
On Friday, Bates senior captain Elise Lambert wrapped up her college career with a 19th-place finish in the 800-meter run.
Lambert, of Amherst, New Hampshire, finished the 800 in 2 minutes, 15.99 seconds.
Lambert leaves Bates College as a four-time All-American, including a third-place finish in the 800 at the Division III indoor championships earlier this year and a fifth-place showing at last year’s outdoors national championships.
