AUBURN — The City Council on Monday tabled a zone change requested by Hammond Lumber after several neighboring property owners spoke against the proposal.

The zone change at 278 Poland Road from suburban residential to industrial did not receive support from the Planning Board last month. The board suggested that Hammond Lumber “address curb cut reductions” and “create a buffer” to the adjacent neighborhood.

According to a memo from engineering firm Sebago Technics, Hammond Lumber previously purchased the land, and in 2019, demolished and removed a home and barn from the property. The business is looking to expand to the parcel, the memo states.

Several property abutters spoke against the change during the meeting Monday.

During the Planning Board meeting in May, board member Mathieu Duvall made a motion to recommend that the council not rezone the property, “as it would be an encroachment of industrial area into residential neighborhoods.”

The motion was supported 5-2.

The council voted 6-1 Monday to table a vote until July, in an effort to allow the business and engineers time to address concerns from the Planning Board and public.
