A motorcyclist died when his bike collided with a school bus Tuesday afternoon in Buxton.
The Maine School Administrative District 6 bus, which was not carrying any children, and the motorcycle collided around 2:50 p.m. on Narragansett Trail near River Road, the Buxton Police Department said in a statement.
The motorcycle operator was pronounced dead at the scene, and the bus driver was transported to the hospital.
The bus driver’s name has not yet been released. Police said details about the victim will be released once his family has been notified. The cause remains under investigation.
MSAD 6 Superintendent Paul Penna said the bus driver had just completed his route transporting middle and high school students and was heading to the Buxton Center Elementary School to pick up students when the crash occurred. He said the bus driver did not suffer any physical injuries but was transported to the hospital as a precaution.
“Our sympathies go to the family who lost a loved one this afternoon,” Penna said in a statement. “This was a tragic accident.”
Penna said the school district is conducting its own investigation into the crash and is cooperating with the Buxton police.
MSAD 6 enrolls students from Buxton, Hollis, Standish, Limington and Frye Island.
