Civil War living history event set for Oxford July 2

A 161st anniversary of the Civil War event, with a living history of Abraham Lincoln and other Civil War storytellers, is scheduled for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at the American Legion Post 112, 169 King St. in Oxford, hosted by the Oxford Historical Society and Post 112.

John Voehl, a Lincoln historian and presenter, will give three presentations during this free public event. Donations are appreciated, and all proceeds go to support the society and Post 112 to help continue to provide similar events in the future.

Donations will be accepted at the door.

In addition to Voehl’s presentations, Willi Irish, a Livermore native, will portray the “Life of Mercy Lovejoy,” a 19th century pauper. Tizz Crowley will bring to life the wife of Dr. Oren Horr, who served as the assistant surgeon for the USCT #114. Dr. Elizabeth Kingman Horr also observed the suffering of soldiers during the Civil War and was one of the earliest female physicians in Maine.

Schedule:

• 10 a.m.: Willi Irish, “Life of Mercy Lovejoy,” a 19th century pauper.
• 11 a.m.: John Voehl, “Independence Day,” the July 4th of Lincoln’s life. His passion for the Declaration of the Independence, speaking at Independence Hall, Gettysburg Address.
• Noon-1:30 p.m.: Lunch — food for sale, hot dogs and hamburgers provided by Post 112
• 1:30 p.m: John Voehl, “Gettysburg Address” and the rest of the story. Lincoln’s decision to change commanders just before the battle, learn about the battle, and his prayer, vow and consecration.
• 2:30 p.m.: Tizz Crowley, “Life of Dr. Elizabeth Kingman Horr” portrayal. Horr will share her experiences as the wife of Dr. Oren Horr, who served as the assistant surgeon for the USCT #114.
• 4 p.m.: The Voehls, “Log Cabin to the White House” education, their varied experiences and his long passion for learning.
• 5 p.m.: Social hour with coffee, tea, light snacks and pies from Valley View Orchard Pies, donations and to purchase.
