Farmington Historical Society announces a Summer evening at the town’s historic Octagon House. The Sun Porch Soirée, planned for 6-9 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at 126 High St., will be an evening of food, summer punch, music and a tour of the unusual house. A door prize and silent auction will take place as well, according to a news release from the society.

All proceeds will go toward the “Save our Sun Porch” restoration project, partially funded by a 1772 grant from Maine Preservation.

The Octagon, known as the Hiram Ramsdell House, is a landmark in the center of downton Farmington. Built in 1858 it had a colorful history with several owners until 1912 when it was purchased by educator W.G. Mallett. It became that family’s home for 100 years. In 1915 a unique octagonal sun porch was added to the house. The wooden porch has done well over the years but is now in need of jacking and leveling and restoration.

The house is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays to the public. It also is available for event rentals.
