WALES — The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night set the plowing contract for the year, heard about speeding complaints on Centre Road and discussed the possibility of establishing a memorial to the old town house that burned down in 1971.

During the public comment period, resident Dwight Gile expressed his concerns about reckless driving on Centre Road.

“Kids are driving up and down this road up to 70 mph,” said Gile. “At first they did it late at night, but now they do it when my wife is coming home from work, and I don’t want there to be an accident.”

Selectmen decided to place a speed sign on Gile’s front lawn that will also record motor vehicle activity at the location. They also agreed to contact the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department and ask that it gather reports from Gile and his neighbors about the activity in an effort to identify the drivers.

Fire Chief Scott Dimmick reviewed all 10 calls to the department in June. The majority were for mutual aid to other towns in the area.

The fire department is holding a cookout this weekend to celebrate its efforts throughout the year. Dimmick noted that a hand tub competition held by the department is still being planned for Aug. 13.

Dimmick shared that the town’s rescue unit has added a new member, bringing the team to five people.

Selectmen also discussed the addition of a large carved rock to memorialize the old town house, a building that housed the town office until it burned down in 1971. In the fire, all records for the town were lost except for those kept at home by the town clerk. It was agreed to continue to look into the memorial.
