John L. Marquis

AUBURN – John L. Marquis, 82, passed away on Aug. 26, 2022, at his home peacefully after a short battle with cancer.

John was born in Lewiston, Maine on April 3 1940, the son of Ludger and Delia Thibodeau Marquis. He married Claire J. Marquis on Oct. 2, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Church in Lewiston. He graduated from St. Dominic High School in 1958 where he was in band all four years. He then went on to honorably serve his country in the United States Air Force for four years. On his return he began his career with General Electric in Auburn, where he worked for 30 years.

John was a member of Holy Family Church in Lewiston where he was a sacristan, served daily mass for several years and served funeral masses for over 20 years. He was a promoter of the Miraculous Medal for many years, a Secular Franciscan, Son of Mary, Archconfraternity of St. Philomena, and a lifelong member of the Perpetual Rosary. He loved studying scripture.

John had a lifelong passion for roller skating which he did at least once a week since he was a teen up to a few months ago. The Rollodrome in Auburn was his go to place, he really enjoyed engaging with the crowd as many marveled at how he danced on his skates. His other hobbies included ice skating, hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, and playing the French horn.

He is survived by his wife Claire J. Marquis, his sons, Andrew Marquis and his wife Veronica of Walpole, Mass., Michael Sylvester and his wife Vanessa of Peaks Island, James McCoy and his wife Rhea of Sanford, and Renee Therrien of Virginia, as well as 12 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Rita, Lina, Lila, Helena, Sylvia, Alma, and his brothers, Albert and his wife Joan, and Willie and his wife Madeleine.

A visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., on Thursday, September 1, at the Fortin Group Funeral Home, located in Auburn, 217 Turner St. On Friday September 2, there will be a Mass at Holy Family Church, 607 Sabattus St., in Lewiston at 11 a.m., with a burial at St. Peters Cemetery following.
