A motorcyclist was killed Thursday in Waterville in a collision with a van apparently owned by the Kennebec Valley Community Action Program, according to police. WATERVILLE — A motorcyclist was killed Thursday in a collision on College Avenue with a passenger van owned by the Kennebec Valley Community Action Program, police said.
The motorcyclist died at the scene of the wreck and authorities did not release the person’s name.
Deputy Police Chief William Bonney said police received a call about the crash just after 10 a.m. He said he believed the driver of the KVCAP van was not physically hurt. He noted that officers were still in the early stages of the investigation but preliminary findings indicate the motorcyclist lost control and crossed the center line before colliding with the van. Speed appeared to be a factor, he said.
Debris from the wreck was spread across the street, near the intersection with Crescent Street, with the motorcycle in multiple pieces. The KVCAP van had damage to the driver side of the car.
Several people at a nearby business, The Barber Parlor, said they heard the motorcycle rev its engine and then heard the impact with the van.
Suzanne Walsh, CEO of KVCAP, confirmed that the organization owns the van. The van is typically used to transport people to medical appointments, Walsh said, but there were no passengers in the van at the time.
Walsh said that while the wreck will take the van out of service, it’s not expected to affect KVCAP’s broader transportation program or impact service to riders. She said KVCAP was saddened by the news of the crash and offered its condolences to the family of the person who died.
Police closed College Avenue from Hazelwood Avenue to Highwood Street as officers investigated.
