MECHANIC FALLS — The Town Council ratified the appointment of Jake Verrill as water department superintendent at its Monday night meeting.

Verrill succeeds Steve French who retired June 30 after working 15 of his 35 years with the water department as its superintendent.

Verrill was employed as a serviceman in the water department.

In other business, Town Clerk Janice Ferri confirmed to the council that hunting is permitted on town owned land.

The question if hunting is allowed and if the town is liable for any accident came up at last month’s council meeting.

Ferri said while the town is not liable, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife suggest that permits be handed out to persons who wish to hunt on town land.

Permits are available at the town office.

Councilor Darrell Young also asked that hunters should gain permission from property owners who allow hunting as an act of sportsmanship.

Town Manager Vic Hodgkins said the LED replacement of street lights should be completed at the end of next week.

The council also accepted Peter Ford’s resignation from the Budget Committee due to his moving from town.

Ford, a lifelong resident, served on several town committees and boards including Town Council.
