Bates College graduated 477 students from 39 U.S. states and 40 nations on May 29 in Lewiston.

Local students included Yueh Chuah of Lewiston, who graduated cum laude after majoring in neuroscience and minoring in anthropology and digital and computational studies. Chuah, the daughter of Chan Meng Chuah and Mooi Yong Yang, is a 2018 graduate of United World College, Changshu.

In her first year at Bates, Chuah received the Charles Dana Award, the highest honor Bates bestows on students in their first year. She graduates as a member of the College Key, an honor reserved for students who have exhibited outstanding character, academic excellence, campus and community service, leadership and future promise, and of Sigma Xi, an honor society that recognizes excellence in scientific research.

Emma Block of Lewiston graduated cum laude after majoring in sociology. Block, the daughter of Mary J. Block and Paulette Valliere and Patrick M. Carter and Kathleen M. Carter, is a 2018 graduate of Pioneer High School.

In her first year at Bates, Block received the Charles Dana Award, the highest honor Bates bestows on students in their first year.

Lauren Berube of Auburn graduated after majoring in mathematics and minoring in education. Berube, the daughter of James Berube and Erica Aceto, is a 2018 graduate of Edward Little High School.

Berube was granted the Bates Senior Scholar Award, an honor bestowed upon graduating seniors who have participated in varsity sports for four years and have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Ben Schmandt of Lewiston graduated cum laude after majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. Schmandt, the son of Christopher M. Schmandt and Katherine L. Rosenfield, is a 2018 graduate of Commonwealth School.

Schmandt graduates as a member of Sigma Xi, an honor society that recognizes excellence in scientific research.

Luke Allen of South Paris graduated cum laude after majoring in theater and history and minoring in education. Allen, the son of Holly J. Allen and Roger L. Coffin, is a 2018 graduate of Oxford Hills High School.

Grace Beaudet of Auburn graduated after majoring in psychology and minoring in education. Beaudet, the daughter of Celeste C. Beaudet and Valdor A. Beaudet Jr., is a 2018 graduate of Edward Little High School.

Emma Christman of Litchfield graduated after majoring in geology and biology. Christman, the daughter of Paul M. Christman and Jana H. Christman, is a 2018 graduate of Baxter Academy for Technology and Science.

Caleb Eklund of Lovell graduated after majoring in physics and minoring in mathematics. Eklund, the son of Eric W. Eklund and Kacey L. Eklund, is a 2018 graduate of Fryeburg Academy.

Samatar Iman of Auburn, graduated after majoring in history. Iman, the son of Fadumo Y. Omar, is a 2017 graduate of Edward Little High School.

Abdul Mohamed of Lewiston graduated after majoring in sociology. Mohamed, the son of Safia Hersi, is a 2018 graduate of Lewiston High School.

Espen Wheeler of Bowdoinham graduated after majoring in economics and minoring in mathematics. Wheeler, the son of Walter H. Wheeler IV and Katharine D. Wheeler, is a 2018 graduate of St. Andrews School.
