BASEBALL

Stephen Scott, Izzy Wilson and newly promoted infielder Matthew Lugo each drove in two runs, leading the Portland Sea Dogs to an 8-2 win over the Somerset Patriots in the next-to-last game of the regular season Saturday night in Bridgewater, New Jersey.

The Sea Dogs grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Christian Koss and a two-run single by Scott. Wilson made it 4-1 in the second with his 13th home run of the season.

Five Portland pitchers combined on a four-hitter. Ryan Zeferjahn got the win in relief of Wyatt Olds, who allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings in his Double-A debut.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Bills starting defensive tackle Ed Oliver was ruled out for Monday night’s game against the Tennesee Titans, and his backup, Tim Settle, was listed as doubtful on Saturday, leaving Buffalo potentially thin in the middle against running back Derrick Henry.

Oliver hurt his ankle in a season-opening 31-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 8. Settle practiced Saturday on a limited basis after missing Buffalo’s previous two practices with a calf injury.

• The Titans ruled starting cornerback Kristian Fulton and running back Dontrell Hilliard out for Monday’s game because of hamstring injuries.

GOLF

PGA: Justin Lower birdied the 18th hole to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California.

Lower shot a 3-under 69 to get to 13 under in the opening event of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season.

Defending champion Max Homa and Danny Willett were a shot back after even-par 72s.

LPGA: Former college stars Andrea Lee and Lilia Vu moved into a three-way tie for the lead with Ayake Furue of Japan going into the final round of the AmazingCre Portland Classic in Portland, Oregon.

Lee shot a 5-under 67 and Vu made four birdies on the back nine for a 69 as they joined Furue (67) at 13-under 203. Both Lee and Vu are seeking their first LPGA Tour victory.

LIV: Cameron Smith made a pair of 7-foot birdie putts to finish off his round of 4-under 68 as he overtook Dustin Johnson going into the third and final day of the LIV Golf Invitational-Chicago.

Smith was at 10-under 134, two shots ahead of Johnson, who followed his opening-round 63 with a 73.

They will be joined in the lead group Sunday by Peter Uihlein, who had the low round of a breezy day with a 66. He was three shots behind.

EUROPEAN TOUR: U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick shot a 2-under 69 in challenging conditions in Guidonia Montecelio, Italy, to take a one shot lead over Rory McIlroy and Aaron Rai into the final round of the Italian Open.

Two eagles helped Rai shoot up the leaderboard with a flawless 65. McIlroy shot a 71.

SOCCER

ENGLAND: Jack Grealish’s goal after 55 seconds – his first of the season – sent Manchester City on its way to a 3-0 Premier League win at Wolverhampton.

Erling Haaland also scored, giving him 14 goals in nine games this season.

• Son Heung-min ended his goal drought this season by scoring a hat trick after coming off the bench in Tottenham’s 6-2 win at home against last-place Leicester, keeping the Spurs level on points with Manchester City atop the Premier League standings.

• American goalkeeper Zack Steffen returned to Middlesbrough’s lineup for a 0-0 draw against Rotherham in the English Championship after missing four games because of a knee injury.

The 27-year-old had not played since Aug. 20, Middlesbrough’s fifth match of the season.

Steffen was left off the roster for upcoming World Cup warmup matches, and U.S. Coach Gregg Berhalter said Steffen received a platelet-rich plasma injection.

GERMANY: Augsburg stunned defending champion Bayern Munich in their Bavarian derby, 1-0, and Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 Ruhr derby win over Schalke was overshadowed by a serious-looking ankle injury to captain Marco Reus.

SPAIN: Robert Lewandowski scored twice to lead Barcelona to a 4-0 victory at home against Elche.

Barcelona moved to the top of the league standings, one point above Real Madrid, which plays at Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

NETHERLANDS: American forward Ricardo Pepi ended a 30-match scoreless streak for club and country that reached almost a year, getting his first goal for Groningen in a 2-1 loss at Sparta Rotterdam.

Pepi, 19, had not scored since getting two goals for the United States in a 2-0 win over Jamaica last Oct. 7 during a World Cup qualifier.

TENNIS

DAVIS CUP: Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Griekspoor won their singles matches against Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul as the Netherlands won their Davis Cup Finals group with a 2-1 victory in Glasgow, Scotland.

Van de Zandschulp defeated Fritz, 6-4, 7-6 (3), after Griekspoor opened with a 7-5, 7-6 (3) victory over Paul.

Rajeev Ram and Jack Sock of the U.S. won doubles against Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop.

The United States and Netherlands were already assured of reaching the quarterfinals. The U.S. will play the Group A winner, most likely Italy. The Dutch next face the runner-up in Group C, either Australia or Germany.
