SIDNEY — A strong gust of wind appears to have caused a crash Sunday on Interstate 95 in which a pickup truck hauling a camper jackknifed in the northbound lanes at mile marker 122, according to police.

The crash occurred just before 2 p.m. when a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 driven by Gerald Letendre, 80, of Bedford, New Hampshire, jackknifed, according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

“(State) troopers arrived on scene and made contact with Letendre and his wife who both suffered only minor injuries,” Moss wrote Monday in an email. “The truck and camper had jackknifed but did not completely overturn.  Letendre and other drivers (and) witnesses confirmed a big gust of wind cause the trailer to sway which made Letendre lose control of his vehicle.”

Northbound I-95 was closed for about 45 minutes while emergency crews worked at the scene, according to Moss.

Ace Tire & Auto Service Co. of Waterville responded to tow the pickup truck and camper, she said.

The Sidney Fire Department, Delta Ambulance and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office assisted state police.
