SOUTH PORTLAND — An 11-year-old girl was injured Thursday morning when she was hit by a car while trying to cross Broadway, police said.

The girl was attempting to cross Broadway near Church Street shortly before 8 a.m., according to Sgt. Adam Howard of the South Portland Police Department.

Her leg and hip were hurt and was she taken to the hospital, accompanied by a parent. No charges will be filed, Howard said.

“There was no indication of speeding or anything like that,” he said. “Broadway traffic is bumper to bumper at that hour. She just attempted to dart across the street in an area where there’s no crosswalk because of obstructed visibility – and unfortunately, she didn’t make it. Fortunately, her injuries were non-life-threatening.”

The police department said in a statement later Thursday that the driver of the car had stopped after hitting the girl, and that a preliminary investigation suggested that solar glare may have contributed to the crash. The department also said that area of the street where the incident occurred is on a hill and a curve, which prevents the city from installing a crosswalk there.

“Please be extra cautious during the busy commuting hours, which often coincide with students walking to school,” the statement said. “Reduce your speed, stay focused on the road and be aware of solar glare this time of year.”
