The 23rd annual Waterford Fall Foliage 5K Road Race and 1 Mile Fun Run for Kids returned Oct. 9 after being postponed for two years.

Since 2000, this annual fundraiser for the Tony Waldeier Scholarship has awarded many graduating Waterford students funds to help further their education, even during COVID, according to a news release from Nancy Eaton, race volunteer.

Always held on the second Sunday in October, its success comes from all the dedicated efforts of volunteers, sponsors and the runners. Many families run, volunteer, and contribute year after year, as have loyal and dedicated local sponsors.

There were 156 registrants. The youngest participant was 2, and the oldest turns 100 in January. In first place was Lincoln McCaffrey, 15 (18:19), followed by Eric Darling, 48 (19:06). Immediately after their run, third place Teddy Simpson, 10 (20:15), thanked fourth place Benji Gonzales, 24 (20:17), for running alongside and spurring him on throughout the entire course. Placing fifth and the first-place woman was Sarah Pribram, 54 (20.44).

First place went to newcomer Kember Vanderblu of the Waterford Inne for chili featuring lamb grown by local 4-H. Marian Lawler’s creamy chicken and corn chili was second. The two tied for third were Sabrina Lawler and Kurt Hilarides.

The torch was passed onto the next generation as 92-year-old founding race director Martha Eaton retired after 23 years, passing her microphone over to Paula Easton. Martha was recognized for her many years of outstanding leadership, guidance and dedication to the youth of Waterford.
